submit your work

the journal accepts submissions throughout the year (with occasional downtime for things like housekeeping), and we publish collections of works in january, april, july, and october. as a blanket statement, the journal will consider anything - any form, any structure, any genre (we of course have our own personal tastes & preferences though, and that will be reflected in the consideration process. you can see some of our preferences here). we can't tell you what's right and wrong - all we know is that we'll know it when we see it. all we ask is that submitters read this page in it's entirety & treat the editors with care throughout this process. please note: our submissions will close each reading period when our final contributor cap has been reached.

our reading periods:
january issue: october 15 - december 26
april issue: january 15 - march 26
july issue: april 15 - june 26
october issue: july 15 - september 26

we aim for all submissions to orange juice to be considered, read, and returned to the sender in no more than seven days. we do ask that you give us a two-week grace period, as sometimes the workload is heavier than normal. below are what we generally consider & what we don't. always review journal tastes in addition to guidelines:

what we consider:
-poems of any form, structure, genre, etc. all issues are open call.
- 1-5 poems of any length (no manuscripts, epics, or book-length works).
- previously unpublished poetry only.
- simultaneous submissions.
- one submission of 1-5 works per reading period per author.
- works written in english only.
- strong language is fine & any content matter is welcome.

what we don't consider:
-work written exclusively with a.i. it may be used for inspiration/ideas only.
- extremely lengthy works.
- plagiarized, stolen, or otherwise unoriginal work.
- translations.
- published poetry.
- more than 1 submission of 1-5 works from an author in one period.

- works which encourage hate speech, slurs, sexism, racism, etc.

tastes of the journal:
in general, we consider just about anything. we love poetry that feels good, words that leave a residue. we especially love rambling, poems that conversate, ands and buts and ors and run on sentences. we love the tragic and the triumphant.
haiku & poems that rhyme are not our thing. we also don't really like prose that means nothing, i.e "instagram poetry". here's some links to our favorite poems:

throwing away the alarm clock - charles bukowski
two-headed calf - laura gilpin
neon babylon - angie sijun lou
the orange - wendy cope
jessica gives me a chill pill - angie sijun lou
